week 3
This week was actually a lot better than last week. I started bringing Coco into the pig pen with me and now she is not afraid of the pig anymore. I still would like our progress to be a little better, but I'll take what I can get. She is also really timid around equipment, so I decided to take a break from the animals and try to get her used to loading up in the pickup. She has been in there before, but she always gets nervous and pukes so I wanted to slowly build up her confidence. This weekend I told her to load up in the the drivers seat expecting her to jump to the passenger side, but she just stayed on the floor so I had to drive with her at my feet. I actually think this helped a lot because she wasn't nearly as scared and was willing to get back in the next time I had her load up.
This is Coco sitting the the drivers seat with me just looking out the window as happy as can be.I am really hoping to move forward this week and have her get used to herding the sheep so I can practice with the horses, since my intentions are to make her a cow dog. I think what I am going to try and do this week is to tie her up in a pen with a few sheep so she will get used to them. On the bright side she does come with me into the barn and stays right by my side without wandering off and causing trouble. I think I am going to purchase the herding ball so that I can practice commands on something other than animals, but I'm not sure how fast it will get here if I do order it. I am really proud of Coco so far because she is so wild I did not think we would make this much progress in a short time, especially since I can't work with her everyday.
Thanks for the photo. It makes it so much easier to understand what happened. I appreciate your flexibility in working with Coco and that slowing down is probably better than forcing your Action Plan timetable on her.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you made progress with Coco. Training dogs can be a pain itself, but I can't imagine training a dog to be a cow dog. I can't wait to see what comes next and what the end result is. Again good job Haley!
